Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes
I just wanted to update everyone about some of the changes that have taken place this week (while also paying homage to the great David Bowie). The most obvious change is that the blog is no longer located at Blogger. I’m now hosting on my own domain with Wordpress. I have nothing against Blogger other than I was a bit too restricted to the format. I have a lot more freedom on Wordpress and it shows. I am still, however, working out a few minor bugs that came with converting my template over. I’ll get to those eventually.
I’m hosting my site, willsloanonline.com, through HostMonster now, which has been a great experience so far. For those of you who may be looking for a solid host with a ton of features at a great price then check these guys out. Plans also includes unlimited hosting space and bandwidth. Setting up WordPress is a breeze too. Not only do they fully support PHP/MySQL but they have collaborated with SimpleScripts.com to make setting up your WordPress database completely automatic. No brains necessary. Trust me, I’m living proof.
Some of the changes I’ve made to the new site include a homepage which displays featured posts, news, recent comments and more. I’ve also added an About page with a mini bio and a Contact form. Another significant change is the commenting platform. I’m using Disqus to manage my comments now and that means your can login to post a comment using your Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, or Disqus account. Once you login it will pull your avatar (profile pic thumbnail) from that account and show it next to your comment.
I’ve also decided to add a community feature that fully integrates with Facebook using a powerful toolbar from Wibiya. This will hopefully broaden my readership and open up the doors for an awesome community experience. Originally I had intended to use Google for the community aspect of the site but it slowed my site down dramatically and wasn’t really that great so I removed it. Sorry Google, you know I’m still a fan. Wibiya is still beta testing but they have graciously allowed me to be a part of that phase and I’m looking forward to helping in any way I can. It’s an awesome service.
If you enjoy the blog please pass a link on to your friends and share the love. Be sure to leave comments, share links on Facebook and Twitter, and send me your personal feedback. If you’d like to see something new, updated, or removed just contact me. Maybe you have a topic or a question that you’d like my perspective on. I’m always open to any and everything so don’t be afraid to throw it my way.
Thanks for reading!!

Just remember to keep your Wordpress install version updated to the latest version, so as to avoid being hacked.
Yeah, no joke. In the last couple of weeks I've heard three different stories of prominent bloggers getting Wordpress hacked. I did find a sweet plugin that modifies the security of the database to make it more secure, but I'll also take your advice and keep up-to-date with the installs. How are things going in your world?
At least it makes it easy to do with the new version, just click a button and it updates itself.
Not a lot going on here. On my four days off between shift rotations. Playing some World of Warcraft, doing some homework.
Yeah, it also notifies you of new updates on the admin page too. I'm current right now though so no worries.
Four days…niiiice. What do you do now that your back in the States?
Yeah four days off is nice, but I also have training days in there, plus usually 5 – 6 on call days a month, etc. Then when I'm working I work 13 hour shifts. Two 13 hour day shifts, then two 13 hour night shifts. Pretty brutal.
I do missile warning. I use the DSP Satellite system which is a system of satellites with infrared sensors on them to monitor the globe for missiles.
Ugh, brutal for sure. I would hate that. I'm so undisciplined (lazy).
Wow, that's one of those jobs that if you screw up it's probably a BIG deal, right? And I'm just worrying about servers crashing. Jeez, I will never have a bad day again after hearing about your job. LOL
Yeah they don't like it very much if you mess up. If I were to make even a small mistake I'd immediately be taken off the console and sent home until I could go through training again to teach me how not to make that mistake again, someone would have to be called in to fill in for me until I got back on crew, etc. Have to stand in front of the group commander in my blues to tell him why I messed up, etc.
95% of the time it's just mind-numbingly dull though. But I only have a year and a half to go until I can get out. So that's… good I guess. Still a long time.
Well thanks, Derek. You've just given me a new found appreciation for my job. Hang in there. Time flies when you're having…fun.
