Help Us Raise Money For the Not For Sale Campaign!

“Stolen” (Exclusive Music Video) - Performed by 3 Minutes to Live
This video was created solely from volunteer efforts in order to bring awareness to the growing issue of human trafficking and the child sex trade.

Check out 3 Minute’s to Live on the web at http://3mtl.com and help them raise donations for the Not For Sale Campaign. 100% of the proceeds from their new single Stolen goes straight to the Tennessee chapter of Not For Sale, a non-profit organization which strives to end human trafficking.

Virtual Vacation – No Excuses

I haven’t posted anything since last Friday. This absolutely kills me because I made a personal goal to post something new at least once a day. I took off of work and enjoyed a four day weekend, but I somehow have a mountain of excuses why I haven’t put anything new up. What did I do with all of that time?

Am I just making excuses?

Here are a few of them:

  • My son’s 3rd birthday was Friday.
  • We had a re-bachelor party for a friend on Saturday night.
  • I took my son to the ER with a busted noggin on Sunday.
  • I helped some friends get their server back up on Monday.
  • Monday was also my birthday.
  • I played catch up at work and was T-I-R-E-D when I got home on Tuesday.

How long does it take to put up a new post? About 30-45 minutes, depending on a lot of factors. Did I really not have 45 minutes at any point during all of this to stop and put a post up?

You guys know how I love to advocate Chris Brogan of chrisbrogan.com. I do this because I believe in his message and if I can help him extend it in any way, I’m going to. Chris recently put up a video about making excuses. I thought I’d share it with you guys, but I also encourage you to subscribe to his blog. The guy is an energizer and he will get you thinking.

Here’s the video:

Can’t see it? Click here.

My goal is to be a successful writer but I won’t succeed if I continue to let excuses get between me and my goals. I’ll pose the same question to you that Chris posed to his audience…

How are you dealing with excuses in your own pursuit of success?

Top 10 List of Things I Want For My Birthday

Next month, on the 26th of October, I’ll be turning 29. I usually just shrug my shoulders and say “I dunno” when someone asks me what I want for my birthday (my wife hates this). This year I decided to be more decisive so I’ve come up with a list of 10 things that I would definitely love to have. This is obviously more for family and friends but if you feel the nagging desire to buy me a gift I’m not going to stop you. Let me also say there isn’t any obligation to family or friends either. Gifts are always optional with me and this is purely informational. So here it is, in no specific order:

Have Kanye Interrupt Your Site

Add Me!
I thought I’d be a good netizen and provide the code I wrote for adding Kanye West on my homepage. So now you can have Kanye interrupt your own webpage.

First, you need to download this image and upload it to your own web server or a photo hosting service such as Photobucket.

Right click and selectSave As...

Right click and select Save As...

Now add the following code to your style.css file or in between the <style> tags on your webpage :

/* Greet Function */

#greet {
position:absolute;
z-index:1;
background: url("www.yoursite.com/image.jpg") no-repeat center center;
width:635px;
height:380px;
margin-top:15px;
margin-left:0px;
}

Be sure to change the image source URL to the location of the image on your server or photo host. You can also modify the margin properties to suit your needs.

Next, just add the following DIV layer anywhere within the <body> tags of the page you want Kanye to appear on:

<div id="greet" align="center" onclick="this.style.visibility='hidden'">

And that’s it! Piece of friggin cake, right? Enjoy it.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

I ask so little. Just let me rule you, and you can have everything that you want. I just wanted to update everyone about some of the changes that have taken place this week (while also paying homage to the great David Bowie). The most obvious change is that the blog is no longer located at Blogger. I’m now hosting on my own domain with Wordpress. I have nothing against Blogger other than I was a bit too restricted to the format. I have a lot more freedom on Wordpress and it shows. I am still, however, working out a few minor bugs that came with converting my template over. I’ll get to those eventually.

I’m hosting my site, willsloanonline.com, through HostMonster now, which has been a great experience so far. For those of you who may be looking for a solid host with a ton of features at a great price then check these guys out. Plans also includes unlimited hosting space and bandwidth. Setting up WordPress is a breeze too. Not only do they fully support PHP/MySQL but they have collaborated with SimpleScripts.com to make setting up your WordPress database completely automatic. No brains necessary. Trust me, I’m living proof.

Some of the changes I’ve made to the new site include a homepage which displays featured posts, news, recent comments and more. I’ve also added an About page with a mini bio and a Contact form. Another significant change is the commenting platform. I’m using Disqus to manage my comments now and that means your can login to post a comment using your Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, or Disqus account. Once you login it will pull your avatar (profile pic thumbnail) from that account and show it next to your comment.

I’ve also decided to add a community feature that fully integrates with Facebook using a powerful toolbar from Wibiya. This will hopefully broaden my readership and open up the doors for an awesome community experience. Originally I had intended to use Google for the community aspect of the site but it slowed my site down dramatically and wasn’t really that great so I removed it. Sorry Google, you know I’m still a fan. Wibiya is still beta testing but they have graciously allowed me to be a part of that phase and I’m looking forward to helping in any way I can. It’s an awesome service.

If you enjoy the blog please pass a link on to your friends and share the love. Be sure to leave comments, share links on Facebook and Twitter, and send me your personal feedback. If you’d like to see something new, updated, or removed just contact me. Maybe you have a topic or a question that you’d like my perspective on. I’m always open to any and everything so don’t be afraid to throw it my way.

Thanks for reading!!
